Read on to learn more about this ancient symbol.

The Triskele or Triskelion is a pre-Christian symbol that is often thought to be Celtic in origin. The oldest known representation of the triple spiral resides  at the Neolithic Tomb the Brú na Bóinne (aka Palace of the Boyne) in Newgrange, County Meath , Ireland and has been carbon dated  around 3200 BC.

The meaning of the Triskele is another matter entirely. It is widely regarded as an energetic, forward moving symbol and the name itself means “three-legged”; and stems from the Greek word triskeles : (tri) three times (skelos) leg.

The triple spirals have been thought to represent many things including:

  • Body , Mind and Spirit
  • Past, Present and Future
  • Earth, Water and Sky
  • Life, Death and Reincarnation

The Catholic/Christian Church later adopted the powerful symbol and used it to teach the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Others have connected the Triskele with the moon, human female gestation and the Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother and Crone.

Myself, I identify most strongly with the Triple Goddess aspect which I find in my own life:

I was a Maiden until my first son was born, then I became a Mother. The Wise Women in my life instruct me more gently than they ever could as Mothers and show me important life answers that I in turn will pass on when I become a Crone (Wise Woman).

The Triskele and Spiral remind me that I am a part of the Earth’s Cycle.
